1. VECTOR- A heading issued to an aircraft to provide navigational guidance by radar
2. Vector for Spacing = Vectoring for Separation
3. Vector to intercept
4. VERIFY- Request confirmation of information; e.g., "verify assigned altitude."
Pilot : Univ 32 verify active runway 14
5. VFR-ON-TOP- ATC authorization for an IFR aircraft to operate in VFR conditions at any appropriate VFR altitude (as specified in 14 CFR and as restricted by ATC). A pilot receiving this authorization must comply with the VFR visibility, distance from cloud criteria, and the minimum IFR altitudes specified in 14 CFR Part 91. The use of this term does not relieve controllers of their responsibility to separate aircraft in Class B and Class C airspace or TRSAs as required by FAAO JO 7110.65.
Pilot : Approach Univ 32 request VFR-on-top
Approach : Univ 32 Climb VFR-on-top reaching VFR altitude 8,500
(cf) Climb VFR
6. WHEN ABLE- When used in conjunction with ATC instructions, gives the pilot the latitude to delay compliance until a condition or event has been reconciled. Unlike "pilot discretion," when instructions are prefaced "when able," the pilot is expected to seek the first opportunity to comply. Once a maneuver has been initiated, the pilot is expected to continue until the specifications of the instructions have been met. "When able," should not be used when expeditious compliance is required.
